Mohamed Salah will be fit for farewell – Liverpool captain Van Dijk
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed confidence that Mohamed Salah will receive a fitting farewell to his Anfield career, even if injury rules him out for the remainder of the season.
Salah, who is set to leave Liverpool after nine years at the end of the campaign, limped off during Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace with a suspected hamstring injury.
The club is currently awaiting scan results, but with only four matches left, the 33-year-old could have already played his final game in a red shirt this season.
Van Dijk acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation but insisted that Salah’s legacy and send-off are secure.
“If you get injured at this stage of the season, especially in the situation he is in, there are only two more home games left for him. It’s a combination of feelings that go through your mind,” said Van Dijk.
“He will get the send-off regardless. I don’t think that is the thing at this point; we shouldn’t think too far ahead.
He added that Salah’s professionalism leaves room for optimism despite the setback.
“Knowing Mo, he is a quick healer and with the right people around him, let’s see.”
Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has scored 257 goals in 440 appearances, placing him third on the club’s all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
He has been central to Liverpool’s success in recent years, helping the club win the Premier League twice and the Champions League.
Individually, Salah has claimed the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions and won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award a record three times, cementing his status as one of the Premier League’s modern greats.
