Egypt defender Hossam Abdel-Maguid closes in on European move after World Cup heroics
Egypt international Hossam Abdel-Maguid is set to continue his career in Europe after reports linked the Zamalek defender with a move to Bulgarian champions Ludogorets following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old is reportedly close to completing a transfer worth €1.5 million, with the move representing another step in Egypt’s efforts to see more of its leading talents establish themselves in European football.
Deal includes performance-based bonuses
According to journalist Hani Hathout, Ludogorets are expected to sign Abdel-Maguid on a three-year contract.
The reported agreement includes additional financial incentives for Zamalek, who would receive a further €300,000 if the Bulgarian club qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage or €100,000 should they reach the Europa League group stage.
The Egyptian Premier League champions are also expected to retain a 20 per cent sell-on clause for any future transfer exceeding €4 million.
World Cup displays raise defender’s profile
Abdel-Maguid enhanced his reputation during Egypt’s memorable World Cup campaign, making an important impact after coming off the bench for head coach Hossam Hassan.
His defining contribution came in the Round of 32, where he converted the decisive penalty in the shootout victory over Australia to help send the Pharaohs into the last 16 for the first time in the nation’s history.
The defender’s performances throughout the tournament have reportedly increased interest from European clubs seeking defensive reinforcements.
Egypt aiming to increase European presence
The proposed transfer reflects Egypt’s broader ambition to have more of its leading players competing in Europe’s top leagues.
The Pharaohs travelled to the 2026 World Cup with only four Europe-based players in their squad — Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, Haitham Hassan and Ibrahim Adel — while striker Mostafa Mohamed was absent from the tournament.
A move for Abdel-Maguid would strengthen that European contingent as Egypt continue building on the momentum created by their historic World Cup campaign.
