Deano van Rooyen bids emotional farewell to Orlando Pirates after shock exit

Former Orlando Pirates defender Deano van Rooyen has thanked the club’s players, staff and supporters after his unexpected departure from the Soweto giants.

Orlando Pirates confirmed on Friday morning, 21 August, that they had mutually agreed to end their relationship with the 29-year-old right-back.

Van Rooyen leaves after two seasons with the Buccaneers, during which he made more than 50 appearances in all competitions and became a dependable option in defence when selected.

He joined Pirates before the 2024/25 campaign and made an immediate impression in his first season. The former Stellenbosch player featured in 20 South African Premier Division matches and scored once.

His involvement was reduced in his second campaign, however, with ongoing injury problems and strong competition for places limiting his opportunities in the league.

Despite that decrease in playing time, Van Rooyen departs Mayfair with four domestic trophies on his record, having played a part in a successful spell for the Soweto club.

In a message posted on social media, the full-back reflected on his time at Orlando Pirates and said he was grateful for the chance to represent the club in its famous black-and-white colours.

“I would like to express my gratitude towards the club for an incredible two years. What a honour and privilege it has been to wear the colours and represent the team. I’m grateful for every opportunity, every challenge, lesson and shared memories with each one of you”

Van Rooyen added that his time with Pirates had shaped him beyond his development as a footballer.

“And I leave this club with a heart full of gratitude and memories that I’ll forever cherish,” Van Rooyen averred in his social media post.

The defender also paid tribute to the teammates with whom he shared the dressing room and the demanding moments of competition.

“Thank you for the brotherhood, the battles and unforgettable moments on and off the pitch. To the coaches, technical team, management, and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for the guidance, the dedication and support throughout my time here.”

Van Rooyen reserved particular thanks for the club’s supporters, saying their backing had made representing the Buccaneers a privilege.

“And last but not least, my Orlando Pirates supporters, it has been a privilege to play in front of you and to be part of the Buccaneers family. Thank you for the loyalty and unwavering support.

“I leave this club with nothing but respect, love and a grateful heart. Once a Buccaneer, always a Buccaneer “

Van Rooyen’s exit leaves Kamogelo Sebelebele as Orlando Pirates’ main right-back. The club is understood to be targeting Thabang Matludi before the transfer window closes.

Pirates also have the option of bringing back Tshepo Mashiloane, who is currently on loan at Sekhukhune United.
