BREAKING NEWS: Patrick Vieira confirmed as new Senegal coach

Senegal have confirmed the appointment of former France international Patrick Vieira as the new head coach of the senior national team, with the Arsenal and Inter Milan legend taking charge following the departure of Pape Thiaw.

The Senegalese Football Federation announced Vieira’s appointment but said the date of his official presentation, as well as further details concerning his installation, would be communicated at a later date.

Vieira takes over a Teranga Lions side that endured a disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Thiaw losing his position following the team’s poor performance at the tournament.

The appointment represents a major return to international management for Vieira, who brings extensive experience from both his playing and coaching careers.

The former France captain is reportedly set to earn between €35,000 and €45,000 per month, with his proposed contract expected to run for four years.

Ambitious targets for Vieira

The Senegalese Football Federation is understood to have set ambitious objectives for Vieira as the country seeks to maintain its status as one of Africa’s leading football nations.

One of his immediate targets will reportedly be to lead Senegal to the final of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament, which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, will provide Vieira with his first major competitive test as Senegal coach.

Longer-term expectations are also understood to be high, with Senegal keen to build on the success achieved by the national team over the past decade.

The Teranga Lions won their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022 and have established themselves as one of the continent’s most consistent sides.

Vieira will therefore be expected to restore confidence and competitiveness to a team that fell short of expectations at the 2026 World Cup.

Vieira’s coaching journey

Vieira began his senior coaching career with Manchester City, where he worked within the club’s youth structure before making the move into first-team management with New York City FC in Major League Soccer.

He subsequently returned to Europe, taking charge of French club Nice before moving to England to manage Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

After leaving Palace, Vieira returned to France with Strasbourg before moving to Italy for his most recent coaching position at Genoa.

His managerial career has therefore taken him across several major football leagues, giving him experience of different tactical environments and dressing rooms.

The Senegal job will nevertheless represent a different challenge, with Vieira now responsible for managing one of Africa’s most high-profile national teams.

A World Cup winner returns to Africa’s biggest stage

Vieira arrives with an outstanding playing pedigree.

He was part of the France team that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil and also helped Les Bleus win the European Championship two years later.

At club level, his greatest achievements came at Arsenal, where he became captain and a central figure in Arsene Wenger’s successful side.

Vieira was one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders during his Arsenal career, combining physical strength, technical ability and leadership.

He also played for Inter Milan and other major European clubs during a distinguished career that established him as one of his generation’s leading midfielders.

Now, more than two decades after lifting the World Cup as a player, Vieira begins a new chapter by taking charge of Senegal.

His appointment will be closely watched as the Teranga Lions attempt to recover from their disappointing World Cup campaign and return to the top of African football.

The Senegalese Football Federation is expected to announce the date of Vieira’s official presentation and provide further details about his coaching staff and the next steps in his appointment in a subsequent communication.
