Chelsea left furious after Monaco pull out of Lamine Camara deal

Chelsea were left frustrated after Monaco reportedly withdrew from an agreement to sell Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara in the final hours of the transfer window.

According to David Ornstein, Chelsea had reached an agreement with Monaco for Camara’s transfer, with the deal expected to be worth about €54m.

The London club had moved quickly to complete the signing after Enzo Fernández’s departure to Manchester City. Camara was identified as the player Chelsea wanted to bring into midfield, and negotiations appeared to have reached an advanced stage.

An agreement between the two clubs had reportedly been reached, while Camara had also agreed personal terms on a six-year contract.

The 22-year-old had gone as far as completing his medical examination, further suggesting that his move to Stamford Bridge was close to completion.

Chelsea therefore believed they had done enough to secure the Senegal international before an unexpected change in Monaco’s position altered the situation.

Monaco change their decision

According to Ornstein, Monaco decided to withdraw their agreement shortly before the transfer window closed.

The late reversal reportedly came in connection with the situation involving Folarin Balogun, who eventually completed a move to Everton in the final minutes of the window.

The decision came as a major setback for Chelsea, who had been counting on Camara to strengthen their midfield following Fernández’s departure.

The Senegalese midfielder had already accepted the terms of the proposed move to London and appeared set to begin a new chapter of his career in the Premier League.

Instead, the late change meant Camara remained at Monaco despite the apparent progress that had been made between the clubs.

For Chelsea, the timing of the decision was particularly frustrating. The club had accelerated its pursuit of the midfielder after Fernández’s move to Manchester City and had seemingly taken the necessary steps to complete Camara’s arrival.

The reported €54m agreement, the six-year contract and the player’s completed medical had all pointed towards the transfer being finalized.

However, Monaco’s decision to change its position in the closing stages prevented the deal from going through.

Camara will consequently remain with Monaco despite having agreed terms with Chelsea and completing his medical for the proposed transfer.

The situation leaves Chelsea disappointed after the club believed it had secured the midfielder before the final developments involving Monaco and Balogun changed the outcome.

For Camara, what appeared to be a major career move to Stamford Bridge has instead ended with the 22-year-old staying at Monaco.

The Senegal international had been prepared to make the switch to England, but the late intervention meant the transfer could not be completed.

Chelsea’s efforts to reinforce their midfield after Fernández’s departure therefore ended in frustration, while Camara remains a Monaco player despite the reported agreement between the two clubs.
