Ahmed Abdelkader: Zamalek linked with move for Egypt winger from Al‑Karma

Egyptian left winger Ahmed Abdelkader of Iraqi side Al‑Karma is being linked with a return to his home country with Egyptian Premier League club Zamalek reportedly interested in a summer move.

The 27-year-old, valued at €325k on Transfermarkt, is the subject of fresh speculation after reports in Iraq and Egypt suggested Zamalek are monitoring his situation in the Iraq Stars League. The probability of a deal remains unclear – listed simply as “?” – but the absence of a confirmed contract expiry date at Al‑Karma has prompted talk that he could be available either for a modest fee or, depending on his contractual status, as a potential free agent in the near future.

Abdelkader, who wears the number 14 shirt for Al‑Karma, has rebuilt his career in Iraq after moving to the Stars League, operating primarily as an attacking left winger but cutting inside onto his favoured right foot. Standing at 1.80m and born in Cairo on 23 May 1999, he fits the profile of a wide forward capable of stretching play on the flank and driving inside into central areas.

The former Egypt youth international has been a regular feature for Al‑Karma in the current campaign, featuring in the club’s recent Iraq Stars League fixtures. In their latest outing before this rumour surfaced – a league match in late May against domestic opposition, which finished with Al‑Karma narrowly beaten – Abdelkader started on the left of the attack and produced an industrious display, contributing to several attacking moves even as his side failed to convert pressure into goals. That recent form has underpinned the renewed interest from Egypt.

Zamalek, one of the country’s most decorated clubs, are expected to reshape their attacking options ahead of the new season. The Cairo giants have used the transfer market in recent years to target players with experience abroad but still in their peak years, and Abdelkader’s age and market valuation make him a comparatively low‑risk option in a window where budgets are under pressure.

The winger’s current market value of €325k would place him at the lower end of Zamalek’s traditional spending spectrum, raising the prospect that the club could secure a deal without a major outlay should Al‑Karma be open to negotiation, or that he could even move as a free agent if his contractual status allows it. The lack of publicly available information on when his deal in Iraq expires has added to the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations.

Abdelkader’s career path has taken him from Cairo to the Iraq Stars League, where he has gained experience in one of Asia’s increasingly competitive domestic competitions. His time at Al‑Karma has allowed him to mature tactically, operating as an out‑and‑out left winger but also being deployed across the front line when required. That versatility, combined with his familiarity with Egyptian football culture and conditions, is seen as an advantage for any potential return to the Premier League.

For now, the move remains at the rumour stage, with no agreement reported between the clubs and no indication that personal terms have been finalised. The uncertainty around the probability of the transfer – recorded only as “?” – underlines that the situation could yet develop in several directions, including a contract extension in Iraq or interest from other clubs in the region.

If the switch to Zamalek does materialise, however, it would offer Abdelkader a high‑profile platform back in Egyptian football at a pivotal point in his career, with the chance to enhance his reputation, compete for domestic honours and potentially reopen doors at international level.
