Aston Villa’s Watkins decision puts Emery under spotlight after Brighton rout
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has been widely mocked after appearing to refuse to answer a question about Ollie Watkins’ absence before his side’s opening Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Emery’s unusual response came as Watkins’ expected transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal continued to dominate the background to the fixture. When asked why the England striker was not included in the squad, the Spanish manager chose “silence”, creating an awkward moment that quickly attracted ridicule on social media.
The episode was followed by a hugely disappointing afternoon for Aston Villa, who were beaten 4-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion. Emery’s calm demeanour before kick-off had changed completely by the end of the first half, with Villa 4-0 down and reduced to 10 players.
Watkins was left out of the squad for the match as negotiations between Aston Villa and Al Hilal continued during the final hours of the summer transfer window. His omission moved the Saudi club closer to completing a deal for the 30-year-old forward.
Al Hilal’s position has been strengthened by an agreement already reached with Watkins over personal terms. The striker has accepted the prospect of joining the Saudi club, known as “The Leader”, leaving Aston Villa’s approval as the main obstacle to the transfer being completed.
The uncertainty surrounding Watkins’ future had already made his absence a major talking point before the match. Emery’s decision not to explain the situation added further attention, particularly after his refusal to respond directly when questioned by the media.
That focus intensified as Brighton & Hove Albion took control of the game. The home side’s four-goal advantage before the interval, combined with Aston Villa’s numerical disadvantage, left Emery facing a difficult opening fixture and increased scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding Watkins.
Watkins has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia while remaining an Aston Villa player, but the negotiations have not yet been completed. Al Hilal have secured the forward’s agreement on personal terms, although the clubs still need to reach a final arrangement before the transfer can go through.
The striker’s removal from the squad against Brighton & Hove Albion was therefore seen as another sign that the proposed move could be nearing completion. However, Aston Villa’s consent remains essential, and the club’s position is still the decisive factor in whether Watkins leaves.
For Emery, the pre-match incident and the heavy defeat became closely connected in the aftermath of the match. What began as an unusual response to a question about one player ended with Aston Villa four goals behind and playing with 10 men, while social media users turned the manager’s “silence” into a source of widespread mockery.
