AS Monaco are working to sign Freiburg left-back Jordy Makengo, with the French defender understood to have agreed in principle to join the Ligue 1 club.

According to L’Equipe, Monaco are now trying to reach an agreement with Freiburg for the 25-year-old, who remains under contract with the German club until 2028.

Makengo could become the latest addition to Filipe Luis’ squad as Monaco prepare to begin their Ligue 1 campaign.

Monaco searching for left-back

The French club are looking for reinforcements at left-back after allowing Caio Henrique and Kassoum Ouattara to leave during the summer.

Henrique joined Ajax, while Ouattara moved to Besiktas, leaving Monaco needing another option in the position.

Makengo would provide competition for Brazilian full-back Nazinho if Monaco can complete an agreement with Freiburg.

The defender’s potential arrival would give Filipe Luis another option as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging in Ligue 1.

Financial constraints slow negotiations

Despite Makengo’s reported agreement in principle with Monaco, the transfer is not yet complete.

L’Equipe reports that Monaco are currently short of funds, which has slowed their activity in the transfer market.

The club must therefore find a way to reach an agreement with Freiburg while managing their financial limitations.

Makengo remains tied to Freiburg until 2028, meaning Monaco will need to negotiate a deal with the Bundesliga club before the move can go ahead.
