Bellingham and Calatrava share spoils as Alexander-Arnold draws Mourinho’s ire

Jose Mourinho was left visibly frustrated by Trent Alexander-Arnold as Real Madrid were held by Espanyol in the Portuguese manager’s first competitive match in charge of the club for 4,380 days.

Real Madrid took the lead through Jude Bellingham after nine minutes, but Espanyol levelled when Alex Calatrava found the net in the 30th minute.

With Real Madrid searching for a winning goal in the second half, Mourinho introduced former Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold in place of Denzel Dumfries with 10 minutes remaining.

The England international had been brought on to provide an attacking outlet from right-back, but his brief appearance quickly became notable for an unsuccessful pass.

Five minutes after coming on, Alexander-Arnold attempted to switch play towards Vinicius Junior. However, he failed to find his team-mate and sent the ball directly out of play.

The mistake appeared to prompt an immediate reaction from Mourinho. According to The Sun, the Real Madrid manager remained seated but waved his arms in frustration after the error.

Former Arsenal midfielder Stuart Robson said the incident was particularly unfortunate for Alexander-Arnold.

“This didn’t serve Alexander-Arnold in any way, that’s for sure”.

Lead commentator Ian Darke added: “It seemed like a slight expression of disgust”.

The draw meant Real Madrid could not mark Mourinho’s first competitive game back in the dugout with victory. The manager had not led the club in an official match since his previous spell ended, making the fixture against Espanyol his first such assignment in 4,380 days.

Mourinho returned to oversee the match with Real Madrid attempting to improve their options at right-back. Alexander-Arnold joined the club last year with the intention of becoming the long-term successor to Dani Carvajal.

His first season at the Bernabeu, however, has not developed as planned. Real Madrid officials decided they needed additional cover in the position and signed Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan.

That move left Alexander-Arnold competing for opportunities, and he was introduced from the bench as Real Madrid looked to turn their advantage in possession and territory into a decisive goal.

Instead, Bellingham’s early opener was cancelled out by Calatrava before half-time, leaving the match level. Mourinho then turned to Alexander-Arnold late in the game, but the former Liverpool player was unable to make the desired impact during his short spell on the pitch.

The misplaced pass towards Vinicius Junior provided the clearest talking point from his appearance and prompted visible signs of irritation from Mourinho, according to The Sun.

For the manager, the match represented a significant return to competitive management with Real Madrid. For Alexander-Arnold, it was an unhappy contribution to a disappointing result, as the club began Mourinho’s latest assignment with a draw rather than the victory they had been seeking.
