WAFCON 2026: Cameroon’s Monique Ngock named Player of the Tournament

Cameroon midfielder Monique Ngock has been named the TotalEnergies Woman of the Competition after playing a key role in the Indomitable Lionesses’ historic triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Ngock was recognised as the outstanding player of the tournament after helping Cameroon claim their first WAFCON title.

The awards were announced following the final in Morocco, where Cameroon defeated Malawi to complete their remarkable campaign.

Chawinga wins Golden Boot

Malawi forward Temwa Chawinga was named the tournament’s top scorer after finishing with five goals and two assists.

The award capped an historic campaign for Malawi, who reached the WAFCON final for the first time in their history.

Chawinga finished ahead of Barbra Banda of Zambia, Ivory Coast’s Ines Konan and Cameroon’s Marie Ngah, who also scored five goals each.

However, Chawinga’s two assists gave her the edge in the race for the Golden Boot.

Bihina rewarded for outstanding performances

Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper after playing a decisive role in her country’s title-winning campaign.

The Benfica goalkeeper produced outstanding performances in the knockout stages, particularly against Nigeria in the quarter-finals and hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.

Against Morocco, Bihina saved a penalty at the end of extra time before stopping three attempts in the shootout as Cameroon prevailed 3-1 to reach the final.

Her performances helped provide the defensive foundation for Cameroon’s historic success.

Algeria receive Fair Play award

Algeria were recognised with the Fair Play award following their campaign in Morocco.

The North African side finished third in the tournament after defeating hosts Morocco in the playoff for the bronze medal.

Cameroon complete historic campaign

The 2026 WAFCON was held in Morocco from 26 July to 16 August, with matches played across Rabat and Casablanca.

The tournament featured 16 teams competing in the group stage before the knockout rounds.

Cameroon eventually emerged as champions after defeating Malawi in the final, securing their first-ever WAFCON title.

The individual awards reflected the quality of the tournament, with Ngock taking the main prize while teammate Bihina was recognised as the best goalkeeper and Malawi’s Chawinga finished as top scorer.
