Julian Alvarez faces Atletico dilemma as Arsenal offer comes back into view
Julian Alvarez is reconsidering a move to Arsenal after Barcelona accepted that a transfer from Atletico Madrid is effectively off the table, according to reports in Spain.
The Argentina international had previously rejected an initial proposal from the London club because he remained determined to join Barcelona. However, reports from outlets including AS and SPORT say Alvarez has now changed his position and may be prepared to consider a fresh Arsenal offer.
Barcelona had been exploring a move for the Atletico Madrid forward, but the Spanish club’s stance has not altered since the beginning of the transfer window. Atletico are unwilling to allow their star player to join a direct rival, meaning a transfer to Barcelona is regarded as impossible.
As a result, Barcelona have turned their attention to other possibilities. Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez, who plays alongside Alvarez for Argentina, is now understood to be their leading alternative.
The change in Alvarez’s thinking comes as his situation at Atletico Madrid becomes increasingly difficult. He is currently facing the prospect of remaining with the club despite the breakdown in relations, with his return to the pitch expected to be particularly tense.
Atletico supporters have displayed banners and directed chants at Alvarez in recent days which have shown little affection for the player. A reconciliation between the forward and the club appears highly unlikely, leaving him with a difficult decision to make.
Arsenal first emerged as a possible destination after making an initial offer several days ago. Alvarez turned down that proposal while continuing to push for a move to Barcelona.
That position may now have changed. Although Barcelona remains his preferred destination, the worsening atmosphere in Madrid means Alvarez could decide that a move to England is the most practical solution.
At present, the forward appears to have only two realistic options: stay at Atletico Madrid in an increasingly uncomfortable situation or move to Arsenal. Atletico are willing to sell him to the Premier League club, a position that contrasts sharply with their refusal to negotiate his transfer to Barcelona.
The latest developments have eased some of the uncertainty surrounding the affair, but they also underline the limited choices facing Alvarez. Barcelona’s interest has not led to an agreement, while Arsenal may now have a renewed opportunity to sign the player after his initial refusal.
For Atletico, the priority remains clear: Alvarez will not be allowed to join Barcelona. For the forward, the decision is whether to remain in Madrid under strained circumstances or reopen the possibility of a move to Arsenal.
