Trabzonspor president dismisses reports of agreement with Mohamed Salah

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has moved to shut down speculation that the Turkish club have reached a preliminary agreement to sign Egypt captain Mohamed Salah this summer.

Turkish reports had suggested the Black Sea side were close to landing the former Liverpool forward, with digital platform Sports Digitale claiming Trabzonspor had agreed initial terms with Salah and were waiting to finalise a deal.

However, the story was swiftly challenged when Turkish journalist Onur Tascıoglu said Dogan had personally denied any such agreement.

Writing on his account on X, Tascıoglu said: “التقيت برييس نادي طرابزون سبور، ارتوجرول دوجان، واكد لي ان الشايعات المتداولة بشان انتقال محمد صلاح ليست صحيحة” – “I met Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan, and he confirmed to me that the rumours circulating about Mohamed Salah’s transfer are not true.”

The comments appear to end, for now, talk of Salah moving to the reigning Turkish champions, whose name had emerged after separate negotiations with Besiktas stalled.

Besiktas step back from Salah negotiations

In recent weeks Salah had been strongly linked with a move to Besiktas, but the Istanbul club publicly announced they had withdrawn from active negotiations.

Besiktas sporting director Onder Ozen explained in a press conference that financial demands arising during talks had complicated the proposed transfer.

He said: “بدات تصل طلبات كانت ستودي الى تعقيد الجانب المالي من الصفقة. وافترض ان لاعبا محترما مثل محمد صلاح لا يعلم بهذه التفاصيل. لكن من خلال وكيله ظهرت مطالب مالية تتعلق بحقوق الصورة، بحجم لم يمنحه النادي من قبل لاي لاعب او موظف”.

Ozen continued: “رييسنا المحترم حدد بدقة النقطة التي يجب عندها التوقف. الادارة عمل قانوني، وهناك نسبة قانونية للعمولات، وتجاوز هذه النسبة قد يعني الدخول في امور غير قانونية من جانب ما. لذلك اتخذ رييسنا قرارا واقعيا بدلا من قرار جماهيري. وفي الوقت الحالي، انسحبنا من طاولة المفاوضات”.

Despite stepping back, Besiktas say their original proposal to Salah remains on the table under the same conditions.

Ozen said: “عرض بشكتاش للتعاقد مع محمد صلاح، بالشروط التي وضعها النادي، لا يزال قايما. واذا جاء رد ايجابي على هذا العرض، فيمكن الحديث عن اتمام الصفقة. لكن لن نقدم اي عرض اخر غير هذا. واذا اراد ممثلو اللاعب مواصلة المفاوضات، فهذا يعود اليهم. كما اخبرونا انهم يتفاوضون مع جهات اخرى ايضا. نحن لن نتراجع عن موقفنا، وبالنسبة لنا فان الملف ينتهي عند هذا الحد”.

Three meetings with Salah

Ozen also outlined the extent of Besiktas’s contacts with the 32-year-old, revealing a series of face‐to‐face discussions focused initially on the club’s sporting project.

He explained: “اجتمعنا مع محمد صلاح ثلاث مرات. كانت اجتماعاتي معه مخصصة لشرح مشروع بشكتاش، وتشكيلة الفريق، واسلوب اللعب، واهداف النادي، وطبيعة المنافسة التاريخية، والاجواء داخل النادي. وفي اليوم التالي، اجتمع مدربنا معه، حيث جرت مناقشات حول الجوانب التكتيكية”.

According to Ozen, the footballing side of the talks progressed smoothly, but momentum was lost once negotiations turned to financial terms.

He said: “وبذلك اكتمل الجانب الفني من المفاوضات. لكن عندما بدانا مناقشة الامور المالية، تراجعت سلاسة المفاوضات التي كانت موجودة في الايام الاولى، وذلك بدءا من 21 يوليو. اذ تباطات وتيرة تبادل المعلومات، وبدات تصل طلبات من شانها ان تودي الى تعثر الجانب المالي”.

Previous reports in Turkey have claimed to outline Salah’s motivation for considering a move to the Turkish league, while separate coverage has highlighted the interest that a potential transfer to Besiktas has generated from Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Salah a free agent after Liverpool exit

Salah is currently without a club after bringing his nine-year spell at Liverpool to an end at the conclusion of last season.

The forward, who won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Anfield, returned to international duty with Egypt at the World Cup, where they were eliminated in the last 16 by Argentina.

With Trabzonspor’s president denying any agreement and Besiktas insisting they will not improve their existing offer, Salah’s next move remains unresolved as the summer window continues.
