Mostafa Asal wins Qatar Classic as Amina Orfi set to become youngest world number one

Egypt’s Mostafa Asal won the Qatar Classic with a straight-games victory over France’s Victor Crouin.

Asal, the men’s world number one, completed a 3-0 success against Crouin, winning 11-5, 11-6, 11-2.

The women’s title was claimed by Egypt’s Amina Orfi, who defeated fellow Egyptian Hania El Hammamy 3-2 after taking the deciding game 12-10.

Orfi is set to become the new number one in the world rankings, with the updated list due to be announced next Monday.

At 19 years and two months, Orfi will become the youngest player to reach the top of the squash rankings. She will break the record previously held by New Zealand’s Susan Devoy, who achieved the feat in 1984.

Orfi will be the fifth Egyptian woman to top the world rankings, following Raneem El Welily, Nour El Sherbini, Nouran Gohar and Hania El Hammamy.

Her Qatar Classic triumph also means Orfi will become the 18th woman to reach number one in the history of the squash world rankings. She will join a list that includes some of the sport’s leading figures, including Malaysia’s Nicol David and Australia’s Michelle Martin.
