Egyptian side Pyramids FC have confirmed the appointment of South African coach Rulani Mokwena as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The club announced the arrival of the 38-year-old on its official platforms with the message: “A new beginning with lots of ambition… Welcome, Rulani Mokwena.”

Mokwena replaces Krunoslav Jurčić, whose contract expired at the end of last season, as Pyramids look to build a new technical project capable of challenging for major honours.

Mokwena oversees first training session

The South African has already begun work, taking charge of his first training session at the Air Defense Stadium shortly after his appointment.

Pyramids hope Mokwena’s appointment will usher in a successful new era as the club prepares for another campaign in domestic and continental competitions.

African coaching pedigree arrives in Cairo

Mokwena is regarded as one of Africa’s brightest young coaches after guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to the South African league title with his progressive, attack-minded style of football.

He is also well known to Egyptian football fans for leading Sundowns to a memorable 5-2 victory over Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League on 11 March 2023, a result that remains one of the heaviest defeats suffered by the Cairo giants in recent years.

Following his spell with Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca, Mokwena now takes on a fresh challenge in Egypt, where he will aim to establish Pyramids among the continent’s elite while competing for silverware on multiple fronts.
