South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns mourn the death of midfielder Jayden Adams at 25
South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
The talented midfielder, who recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, passed away under circumstances that have not yet been disclosed.
Details surrounding his death remain unclear, with his family requesting privacy as they come to terms with the devastating loss.
Confirmation of Adams’ passing came through his representatives and guardian, who verified the tragic news.
Mamelodi Sundowns were also contacted for comment, but neither confirmed nor denied the reports, instead appealing for respect and privacy for the player’s family during this difficult period.
Brendine Johnson, Adams’ mentor, spoke on behalf of the family in an emotional statement, describing the profound shock and heartbreak caused by the midfielder’s sudden passing.
“At this moment, things are still raw, you know, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone. This passing has ripped everybody apart, returning from the World Cup just now, and then getting such news, you know. I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning and being able to return after the World Cup and go, you know, being a CAF champion, knowing what lies ahead, he was prepared. He doesn’t waste time away, being at home with his family.
“So at this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Yes, I can tell you that he passed on. Nobody expected this.”
Adams had emerged as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents in recent years. He first made a name for himself with Stellenbosch FC, where his composed displays in midfield earned widespread recognition and eventually secured him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns.
His development continued at the Pretoria-based giants, where he established himself as a key member of the squad while also becoming an important figure for the South African national team.
The 25-year-old’s stock rose even further following his performances at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, where he represented Bafana Bafana on football’s biggest stage.
His displays reinforced his reputation as one of the country’s most promising midfielders and suggested an even brighter future lay ahead.
Adams had recently returned from the global tournament and was preparing to resume club duties with Sundowns, fresh from another successful campaign in which the club added to its domestic success and continental ambitions.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves throughout the South African football community, with tributes expected to pour in from teammates, clubs, supporters and football stakeholders across the continent.
Further information regarding the circumstances of Adams’ passing and funeral arrangements is expected to be released by the family in due course.
The football community continues to extend its heartfelt condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African national team and everyone affected by the tragic loss of one of the country’s most gifted young footballers.
