2026/27 Egypt Premier League season to kick off on August 20 with new format
The Egypt Premier League will officially begin its 2026/27 season on August 20, with organizers introducing a revised competition format designed to enhance competitiveness at both ends of the table while paving the way for a reduction in the number of participating clubs in the coming years.
The campaign will start with all 20 clubs competing in a single-round league format, where each team will face every other side once during the opening phase of the season.
Following the completion of the first round, the league will split into two separate groups based on the standings.
The top six teams will qualify for the championship group, where they will battle for the Egyptian Premier League title in the second phase of the season.
Meanwhile, the remaining 14 clubs will enter the relegation group, with the focus shifting to survival. At the end of the campaign, four teams from the relegation group will be demoted to the Egyptian Pro League.
The revised structure forms part of the Egyptian Football Association’s long-term plan to streamline the country’s top-flight competition after expanding the league in recent seasons.
League officials have confirmed that the 2027/28 campaign will feature 19 clubs before the competition returns to its traditional 18-team format from the 2028/29 season.
The phased reduction is expected to create a more balanced fixture calendar, improve the quality of competition, and ease scheduling challenges that have affected previous seasons.
With the new format now confirmed, clubs will intensify preparations ahead of the August 20 kickoff as they aim to secure a place in the championship group and challenge for domestic honours, while others will be focused on avoiding the relegation battle in what promises to be a highly competitive Egyptian Premier League season.
