Senegal defender Ibrahima Ba chooses Strasbourg over Benfica in €20m transfer
Senegalese defender Ibrahima Ba is set to join French club RC Strasbourg Alsace after turning down an offer from Portuguese giants Benfica, according to reports.
The 21-year-old Famalicão centre-back had been widely expected to move to Lisbon, but he has instead opted for a switch to France where he will reunite with former coach Hugo Oliveira.
Oliveira, who previously worked with Ba at Famalicão, was recently appointed as Strasbourg’s new manager and is believed to have played a key role in convincing the defender to continue his development under his guidance.
Famalicão secure major deal for Senegal prospect
Famalicão are expected to receive €20 million for Ba, while also keeping a 15 per cent share of any future transfer fee involving the player.
The Senegal international joined the Portuguese club in the summer of 2024 and has made 27 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist during his time in Portugal.
Ba’s current contract with Famalicão runs until 2030, giving the club a strong negotiating position in securing a significant transfer fee.
Benfica suffer defensive setback
The decision represents a setback for Benfica and manager Marco Silva, who had identified Ba as an important addition to strengthen their defence ahead of the new season.
The Portuguese club are looking to rebuild their backline following the departure of veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi, while António Silva is also set to leave for AFC Bournemouth.
However, Ba’s decision to move to Strasbourg means Benfica will now have to explore alternative options as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
Strasbourg continue investment in young talent
The move reflects Strasbourg’s commitment to developing promising young players, with Ba viewed as a defender capable of making further progress in Ligue 1 under Oliveira’s leadership.
The Senegalese youngster’s arrival will also add to the growing presence of African talent in European football, as clubs continue to invest in emerging stars from the continent.
