World Cup 2026: Marc Guehi questions England tactics after Argentina heartbreak
England defender Marc Guehi appeared to question Thomas Tuchel’s tactical approach after the Three Lions suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, suggesting his side became too defensive after taking the lead.
England looked on course for a place in their first World Cup final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon fired them ahead early in the second half in Atlanta. However, the Three Lions gradually retreated into their own half, allowing Argentina to dominate possession before Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martinez struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send the reigning champions into the final against Spain.
Reflecting on the defeat, Guehi admitted England lost their attacking intent after opening the scoring.
“We should have carried on. We should have carried on pushing. It kind of felt like we scored and then the mentality was go back, defend.”
Asked whether this England squad could finally end the nation’s long wait for major silverware in future tournaments, the Crystal Palace centre-back admitted it was too soon to look ahead.
“I don’t know. It’s hard to think about the future right now. At this moment, it’s just disappointment.”
Guehi’s assessment echoed the view of captain Harry Kane, who admitted England became overly cautious after taking the lead.
“We seemed to just try and hold on.”
Former England captain Wayne Rooney was even more critical, arguing that Tuchel’s tactical changes handed the initiative to Argentina.
Rooney claimed England “have crumbled” and described the manager’s approach as “too passive,” believing the switch to a defensive shape invited relentless Argentine pressure.
Tuchel has faced widespread scrutiny for introducing defenders and switching to a back five after Gordon’s opener. England had just 12% possession between taking the lead and Argentina’s equaliser as Lionel Messi’s side completely controlled the closing stages.
Despite the criticism, the Football Association has publicly backed the German coach to remain in charge through UEFA Euro 2028. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham described the defeat as “heartbreaking to be so close” while reiterating the governing body’s confidence in Tuchel’s long-term project.
England’s defeat ended an otherwise impressive World Cup campaign. Tuchel guided the Three Lions to the top of Group L before knockout victories over DR Congo, Mexico and Norway. However, their hopes of ending 60 years of World Cup hurt were dashed by Argentina’s late comeback, leaving England to face France in the third-place play-off while Argentina prepare to meet Spain in Sunday’s final.
