Tshepo Maikano: Botswana Right-Back Calls Time on Career After Gaborone Utd Spell

Botswana defender Tshepo Maikano has retired from professional football, bringing an end to his career after his final stint with Gaborone United.

The 38-year-old right-back, born in Gaborone and noted for playing on his favoured right foot, steps away from the game following a long spell in the Botswana top flight. His retirement was confirmed on 14 July 2026, formally marking his departure from Gaborone United, the club he had represented since 2015.

Maikano joined Gaborone United from Extension Gunners FC in July 2015, having previously established himself at Botswana MC. Before arriving at Botswana MC in 2011, he had already built a domestic reputation that would see him spend the bulk of his career moving between leading sides in his home country.

On the continental stage, Maikano featured in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup during his time with Gaborone United. He made four appearances across the two competitions, completing 90 minutes in the Champions League and adding three further outings in the Confederation Cup for a total of 315 minutes of action.

Primarily deployed as a right-back, Maikano’s career has been defined by consistent service within Botswana’s club game rather than moves abroad. His final registered club remains Gaborone United, from whom he officially departed into retirement on 14 July 2026.
