World Cup 2026: Patrick Vieira reveals why Michael Olise was destined to play for France

Former Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has hailed Michael Olise’s remarkable rise, describing the Bayern Munich playmaker as a player who always possessed exceptional football intelligence and insisting there was never any doubt that he would represent France on the international stage.

Vieira, who coached Olise at Crystal Palace between 2021 and 2023, reflected on the midfielder’s development during an interview on RMC’s After Foot programme, explaining that the qualities currently dazzling audiences at the 2026 FIFA World Cup were evident years ago.

“He was a player who was already a cut above the rest, in terms of his game intelligence, his creativity and his technical quality,” Vieira said.

The Arsenal and France legend acknowledged that injuries temporarily slowed Olise’s progress during his time in the Premier League but praised his determination to fulfil his enormous potential.

“He had a difficult season at Palace; injuries prevented him from progressing, but he’s someone who has always known what he wanted and who works incredibly hard.”

“Today, we can see just how talented he is.”

Olise has been one of the standout performers of the World Cup, leading the tournament with five assists while orchestrating France’s attack from midfield. His creativity has played a central role in Didier Deschamps’ side reaching the quarter-finals, with the Bayern Munich star producing two assists in the 3-0 Round of 32 victory over Sweden before helping Les Bleus edge past Paraguay to continue their title defence.

Vieira also shed light on Olise’s international future, revealing that despite being eligible to play for England, Nigeria and Algeria, the midfielder’s heart had always been set on wearing the blue shirt of France.

“He has always been passionate about the French national team. I remember having discussions with him, and there was absolutely no doubt in his mind about which nation he would represent. It was always France.”

Vieira suggested Olise viewed representing Les Bleus as the ultimate ambition from an early age.

“There might have been more to gain with France than with England, but there was never any doubt in his mind about which national team he would represent.”

“He was convinced he would play for the French team. He had zero doubt about representing the French team.”

Vieira also offered an insight into Olise’s personality, describing him as reserved off the pitch but fearless whenever he steps onto it.

“He’s quite reserved. But not shy, he manages to give his opinion without any problem. He doesn’t talk much, but he has a great personality and that was evident on the pitch.”

“When he has to respond, he responds with his technical quality. He’s not someone who will hide in difficult matches. He’s calm, but he’s afraid of nothing on a football pitch.”

Olise’s performances have transformed him into one of the hottest names in world football. Reports linking him with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have intensified during the tournament, although Bayern Munich remain determined to keep hold of one of Europe’s brightest attacking talents.

For now, however, the 24-year-old’s attention remains firmly on helping France win a third World Cup. With his vision, creativity and growing understanding with Kylian Mbappe, Olise has emerged as the creative engine behind one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking sides, and, according to Vieira, the latest heir to France’s rich tradition of world-class playmakers.
