Jacques Ekomie: Sunderland eye Angers left-back in potential Ligue 1 raid
Jacques Ekomie, the Gabon-born French left-back currently at Angers SCO, is being linked with a move to Premier League side Sunderland. The 22-year-old defender, who plays primarily at left-back, has emerged as a target as the Wearside club explore options to strengthen their defensive line ahead of the new season.
Ekomie joined Angers on a free transfer from Bordeaux in July 2024 and is under contract with the Ligue 1 club until June 2027. His value has risen sharply since that move, with his current market valuation standing at around €9 million, a figure that provides a reference point for any negotiations between Angers and Sunderland.
The defender has already accumulated significant senior experience in France, including 50 Ligue 1 appearances and further game time in Ligue 2 and the Coupe de France. Born in Libreville in August 2003, Ekomie holds both Gabonese and French nationality and has progressed through the French system from youth level, featuring for Bordeaux’s U19s and B team before stepping into top-flight football.
Sunderland’s interest comes as Angers face a decision on whether to capitalise on Ekomie’s rising value or retain a left-footed defender who has established himself in their first-team squad. For now, Ekomie remains tied to Angers for another year beyond the coming season, with his deal running through to the summer of 2027.
