Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé opens up on failed Marseille transfer
Emerse Faé has revealed that a proposed move to Olympique de Marseille collapsed after he was asked to step away from international duty with Ivory Coast national team.
The former midfielder, now head coach of the Elephants, said negotiations broke down when the Ligue 1 side made a condition he could not accept. At the time, Faé was playing for FC Nantes and had attracted interest from Marseille.
Speaking to L’Équipe, Faé recalled how the discussions unfolded and why the move ultimately failed.
“He told me they wanted me to come, but that I had to put my national team career on hold.”
The request came from Marseille official José Anigo, according to Faé, and placed him in a difficult position as he weighed club ambitions against national duty.
For Faé, the decision was clear.
“For me, that’s not acceptable ,” he declared.
His refusal to compromise on his international career brought an abrupt end to talks, closing the door on a transfer that could have significantly altered his playing trajectory. Instead of moving to the south of France, Faé pursued opportunities elsewhere.
He eventually left France for England, joining Reading FC, a move that took him away from the Canebière and into a different chapter of his career.
Looking back, the episode highlights the importance Faé placed on representing his country, even at a time when a high-profile club transfer was within reach.
While the Marseille switch never materialised, his stance underlined a commitment that has continued to define his relationship with the national team.
Now leading Ivory Coast from the touchline, Faé’s recollection offers insight into a pivotal moment that shaped both his playing journey and his enduring connection to international football.
