Explosive efficiency drives Orlando Pirates past Kaizer Chiefs in derby clash

Abdeslam Ouaddou credited ruthless efficiency in front of goal as the decisive factor behind Orlando Pirates’ commanding victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday’s Soweto derby.

Pirates struck early and never relinquished control, sealing an emphatic win that lifted them to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.

The result marked a significant statement in one of South African football’s most fiercely contested fixtures.

Tshepang Moremi set the tone inside five minutes, giving Pirates an early advantage.

Oswin Appollis doubled the lead just before half-time to put further distance between the sides, before substitute Evidence Makgopa added a third in the 78th minute to complete the rout.

The triumph allows Orlando Pirates to move above Mamelodi Sundowns at the summit of the Betway Premiership table.

Pirates now hold a three-point lead after collecting 41 points from 18 matches.

Speaking after the match, Ouaddou pointed to a sharpened cutting edge as the key difference on the day, having taken charge following the departure of Jose Riveiro.

“The mindset is still there, the team spirit, the fighting spirit of our group has been there for some time, since the beginning of the season, and the objective of producing quality football remains unchanged,” explained the Bucs coach.

“What changed today [Saturday] was our efficiency in the final third. This means that we were impeccable in front of goal, and on set pieces, I have to congratulate our players today. I’m really happy, I’m a proud coach, proud of my boys today.”

He added: “This is the kind of performance I expect from them, a high level performance, and it is in these moments that we can aim high and play with great ambitions.”

For Pirates, the performance not only delivered derby bragging rights against Kaizer Chiefs but also reinforced their title credentials.

The clinical nature of their finishing underlined the progress Ouaddou believes the team is making.

Pirates return to league action on 4 March with an away fixture against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, seeking to maintain their momentum at the top of the table.
