Mohamed Salah’s Trabzonspor drop into Conference League after Ferencvarosi rout

Trabzonspor were knocked out of the Europa League after suffering a 4-0 defeat by Ferencvarosi in the second leg of their qualifying tie, with Mohamed Salah’s side dropping into the Conference League league phase.

Ferencvarosi repeated their first-leg victory over the Turkish club, having won 1-0 in Turkey, and progressed to the Europa League league phase with a 5-0 aggregate success.

Trabzonspor, meanwhile, will continue their European campaign in the Conference League league phase.

Mohamed Salah started for Trabzonspor before being substituted in the 63rd minute. Their position became increasingly difficult after two players were sent off during a one-sided second leg.

Ruslan Malinovskyi was dismissed in the 13th minute for a strong challenge on a Ferencvarosi player, while Sidney Lopez Cabral received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 57th minute.

Ferencvarosi took control

The hosts created their first clear opportunity in the 17th minute when Deli broke forward down the right and delivered a cross towards Lenny Joseph in front of goal. Joseph could not make contact, and the ball went just wide of the post.

Ferencvarosi took the lead two minutes later. Callum O’Dowda headed past Andre Onana to give the Hungarian champions the advantage.

Onana then kept Trabzonspor in the contest by saving from Kristoffer Zachariassen. The goalkeeper’s stop was followed by a defensive clearance for a corner, and Ferencvarosi went into half-time 1-0 ahead.

Trabzonspor manager Fatih Tekke responded at the beginning of the second half by making three substitutions. Benjamin Bouchouari, Mustafa Eskihellac and Aral Simsir came on for Enis Destan, Wagner Pina and Paul Onuachu.

The changes did little to alter the momentum of the match. Ferencvarosi doubled their lead in the 54th minute after Trabzonspor made a mistake while attempting to play the ball out from defence.

Marius Corbu won possession, moved beyond the defenders and finished past Onana to make it 2-0.

Three minutes later, Lopez Cabral fouled Deli inside the penalty area. The Trabzonspor defender was shown a second yellow card and dismissed, while Ferencvarosi were awarded a penalty.

Deli stepped up and converted the spot-kick, sending the ball past Onana to score Ferencvarosi’s third goal. Trabzonspor were now forced to complete the match with only nine players.

Salah was taken off in the 63rd minute, with Samet Akaydin replacing him, but Trabzonspor could not prevent further damage.

Ferencvarosi added a fourth goal in the 86th minute when Kristian Lisztes unleashed a powerful shot beyond Onana. The result completed a comprehensive victory for the Hungarian side and confirmed their place in the Europa League league phase.

Trabzonspor’s starting XI was: Andre Onana, Sidney Lopez Cabral, Mustafa Eskihellac, Cenk Ozkacar, Stefan Savic, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Melih Kabasakal, Enis Destan, Noah Saviolo, Paul Onuachu and Mohamed Salah.
