Tottenham v Newcastle: draw and both teams to score tipped at 4.20

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United will meet in a potentially decisive Premier League clash on Saturday, with a draw priced at 3.81 and a combined bet on both teams scoring and the match ending level available at 4.20.

The second round of the Premier League takes place this weekend, with both sides looking for their first league victory of the season. The match will be played in London on 29 August 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 16:30 GMT.

Nasser Eddy, a consultant for NCI Sport and presenter of the UEFA Champions League on radio Nostalgie, has provided his assessment and predictions for the fixture.

Tottenham are attempting to recover from a difficult opening weekend after suffering a 3-0 defeat by Brentford on Saturday, 22 August. The result was a sharp setback for a club that narrowly avoided relegation last season and had hoped to build on a late improvement in form.

The London club have made an ambitious series of signings during a high-profile transfer window, spending almost 350m euros on players including Sandro Tonali, Savinho, Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes. Their recruitment is not yet complete, with Omar Marmoush among the players reportedly expected to arrive in the coming days.

That leaves Roberto de Zerbi with an expensive and talented squad to shape into a successful team. Whether the new additions can quickly establish a consistent understanding remains to be seen.

Tottenham did at least respond positively in midweek, beating Charlton 5-1 on Wednesday evening in the second round of the League Cup. The result will not remove all the questions surrounding the team, but it should provide a measure of confidence before Newcastle’s visit. Spain World Cup winner Pedro Porro and his team-mates will hope that performance can become the starting point for a stronger league campaign.

Newcastle began their Premier League season in more encouraging fashion, drawing 2-2 at home with Liverpool on Sunday. Liverpool are regarded as one of the leading contenders for the title. Newcastle then followed that result with a 3-2 League Cup win against West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday.

That sequence has helped the Magpies put behind them an unsettled pre-season, during which they failed to win any of their final three friendlies, losing two and drawing one.

Across their past eight matches in all competitions, comprising six friendlies and two competitive fixtures, Bazoumana Toure and his team-mates have scored in every game. However, they have also conceded at least once in each of those matches.

Newcastle have fallen behind first in six of those eight games, and on every occasion the opening goal came during the first half. It highlights a recurring problem in their starts, although Matthias Jaissle’s side have shown an ability to respond. They scored in reply to the opposition’s first goal in four of those six matches.

Away form remains a concern. Newcastle have not won an away Premier League match since their victory at Chelsea in March. They finished 15th in last season’s away table, recording four wins, five draws and 10 defeats from 19 league trips.

A fixture with a history of goals

Meetings between Tottenham and Newcastle have frequently produced open football. In seven consecutive encounters between April 2021 and April 2024, at least three goals were scored in every match, with results including 5-1, 6-1 and 4-0.

The clubs faced each other three times last season, twice in the Premier League and once in the League Cup. Newcastle won two of those games, by 2-0 and 2-1, while the other ended in a 2-2 draw.

Since 2009, the overall record from 35 meetings is relatively even: Tottenham have won 15, Newcastle 13 and seven matches have ended level.

Toure will be one of the players attracting particular attention. He officially opened his Newcastle goalscoring account in Wednesday’s League Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion, scoring the goal that brought his side back into the match after they had conceded first.

His steady progress has continued since arriving in England, with the forward adapting quickly. Tottenham’s unsettled defence could give him an opportunity to make another decisive contribution and score his first Premier League goal for Newcastle.

The market makes a Tottenham opener a plausible scenario, with that outcome priced at 1.82. A subsequent Newcastle equaliser is priced at 2.48, while the draw at 3.81 is considered the most likely result given the broadly similar strength of the two teams.
