'They are mad' - Calvin Bassey hails Nigerian fans as the most passionate in football

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has described Nigerian football supporters as the most passionate he has ever experienced, highlighting their intensity and unwavering energy on match days.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents but raised in England, Bassey was eligible to represent three nations.

He ultimately chose Nigeria in 2022, a decision that has seen him grow into a cornerstone of the Super Eagles’ defence.

Since his debut, the versatile centre-back has cemented his place in the national team setup while also thriving at club level with Fulham, where he was named the club’s Player of the Season last term.

In a recent conversation with his Fulham and Nigeria teammate Alex Iwobi, Bassey compared the atmosphere at Craven Cottage to what he regularly encounters with the Super Eagles.

Despite having featured for European giants Ajax and Rangers, the 25-year-old insists that the Nigerian supporters stand out for their vibrancy.

“I prefer the Nigerian fans, they are mad. They are constantly, they are there like two hours before the game,” Bassey said.

“There are people there with their drums out, they’ve got everything. I’ve even seen a man with a guitar in the stands.

“They will paint their own body head to toe, they are proper sick. But they can turn on you sometimes, but when you’re winning, they cheer you on. But I can’t lie, I’ve got to respect them. They turn up in every game.”

His remarks underline the unique bond between the Super Eagles and their fan base, who are widely regarded for their colourful displays and emotional investment in the team’s performances.

Bassey, who continues to be one of Marco Silva’s most reliable defenders at Fulham, will soon reconnect with the Nigerian faithful.

The Super Eagles are set to face Benin later this month in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, offering him another opportunity to play in front of the supporters he so deeply admires.
