Richards Bay’s sixth consecutive defeat came despite a dominant performance, leaving coach Ronnie Gabriel lamenting the team’s misfortune. The 1-0 loss to SuperSport United at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday marked another painful chapter for the struggling side, as they failed to convert their chances and were undone by a late goal.
The match saw Richards Bay in control for much of the game, but they were unable to capitalize on their dominance.
The turning point came in the 36th minute when midfielder Nkosikhona Ndaba had a penalty opportunity but failed to convert.
Ndaba’s weak shot was easily saved by SuperSport goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa, leaving Richards Bay to rue the missed chance.
As the game progressed, it seemed as though Richards Bay might finally secure a much-needed victory, but it was not to be.
In the 89th minute, SuperSport United veteran Bradley Grobler scored a dramatic late goal to give the visitors all three points.
The defeat comes as a heavy blow for Richards Bay, who have now gone six matches without a win.
Reflecting on the loss, coach Ronnie Gabriel expressed his frustration but acknowledged that such setbacks are part of the game.
“Experience tells us that sometimes we have seasons where things don’t go our way,” he said. Despite the ongoing struggles, Gabriel remained hopeful, emphasizing the importance of maintaining belief and learning from the team’s tough experiences.
“We must learn from these moments, especially as we prepare for our next match against Golden Arrows,” he added.
Club chairman Sifiso Biyela, however, remained positive, praising the team’s performance as their best of the season.
“The result was disappointing, but the players showed great character and determination. We are heading in the right direction,” Biyela stated.
For SuperSport United, the win provided much-needed relief. Coach Gavin Hunt admitted that his team was fortunate to walk away with the three points, acknowledging that they were outplayed for much of the match.
“Sometimes you need a bit of luck, and we got it today,” Hunt said. “The performance wasn’t great, but the three points are what mattered.”
Hunt also noted that while the win gives his side breathing room, more challenges lie ahead.
With Richards Bay continuing their search for form, Gabriel will hope his side can turn the tide in their upcoming matches, starting with Golden Arrows.
