Calvin Bassey believes Fulham were unlucky not to secure all three points in their 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Despite a valiant effort, Fulham had to settle for a share of the spoils after a second-half equaliser by captain Tom Cairney.
Tottenham took the lead in the 54th minute through Brennan Johnson, but Fulham responded in the 67th minute when Cairney’s strike leveled the game.
However, Fulham’s chances of claiming victory were hampered when Cairney was shown a red card seven minutes from time, reducing the hosts to 10 men.
Despite Tottenham’s dominance throughout the match, Fulham were left feeling they deserved more from the encounter. Speaking after the final whistle, Bassey expressed his disappointment at the outcome.
“I think we deserved more,” the Nigerian international said. He also praised the performance of Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Fraser Forster, who made three crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
Bassey also noted the team’s unfortunate timing of Cairney’s red card, which came when Fulham had gained momentum.
“We were a bit unlucky, especially with the red card when we had the momentum,” he said. “But we managed the game well and didn’t concede a late goal, which has been a problem in the past.”
The 23-year-old defender acknowledged that the result was a positive response after Fulham’s heavy 4-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers the previous week.
“It was a necessary reaction after the defeat to Wolves,” Bassey remarked, adding that the team hoped to have left a good impression on their supporters.
With a busy schedule ahead, Bassey stressed the importance of maintaining confidence heading into their upcoming fixtures.
“We have a busy week ahead of us so it’s good to keep the confidence going into the next games,” he concluded.
Fulham will be looking to build on the performance against Spurs as they head into a challenging series of matches in the Premier League.
