Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri joins Borussia Dortmund on season-long loan

Ethan Nwaneri has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Arsenal for the season, with the Bundesliga club stepping up their interest in the England youth international after new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a serious knee injury.

Dortmund had been monitoring Nwaneri for some time before deciding to make a move. Managing director Lars Ricken described the 18-year-old as a “very talented and technically gifted midfielder”, while saying his arrival represented the best sporting solution following Konstantelias’ injury.

The loan agreement does not include an option for Dortmund to buy Nwaneri at the end of the season. The German club will cover his wages during the campaign.

Nwaneri made history when he became the youngest player to appear in the Premier League, making his Arsenal debut at the age of 15 years and 181 days in 2022. Since then, however, he has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular member of Mikel Arteta’s first team.

Arsenal’s attacking options have become even more competitive following the arrivals of Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze. The club believe another temporary move is the most suitable way to continue Nwaneri’s development, rather than keeping him at the Emirates Stadium without a guaranteed regular role.

Despite sanctioning the loan, Arsenal have no intention of selling Nwaneri. The club gave him a five-year contract last summer and continue to regard him as part of their long-term plans.

The move to Dortmund is Nwaneri’s second loan spell away from Arsenal. He spent the second half of last season with Marseille, making 11 appearances in all competitions and scoring twice.

His time in France was affected by the departure of coach Roberto De Zerbi shortly after Nwaneri joined the club. The teenager will now continue his development in the Bundesliga, where Dortmund have been tracking his progress before completing this latest move.

Nwaneri’s departure comes during a busy period of change at Arsenal. Fabio Vieira has also left the club on a permanent basis, completing a move to Hamburg after spending last season in Germany on loan.

Dortmund’s decision to bring in Nwaneri followed the serious injury to Konstantelias, who had only recently arrived at the club. Ricken said the Arsenal midfielder was the most appropriate sporting solution for the squad after that setback.

The loan means Nwaneri will spend the season away from Arsenal, but the absence of a purchase clause underlines that the agreement is focused on his development rather than a permanent transfer.
