Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid meeting rescheduled for December before Istanbul Super Cup

Barcelona’s La Liga match against Atletico de Madrid has been brought forward to the first week of December, with the change required because both clubs will compete in the 2027 Spanish Super Cup in Istanbul.

The fixture, along with Real Sociedad’s meeting with Real Madrid, was originally scheduled as part of La Liga’s 23rd round during the weekend of 7 February. The two matches will now be played between 2 and 4 December, according to Spanish radio station Cadena COPE.

The revised schedule allows the four clubs involved in the Spanish Super Cup to rearrange their domestic commitments before travelling to the tournament.

Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid are due to meet in the first semi-final on 2 February 2027. Real Sociedad will face Real Madrid in the second semi-final on 3 February, with the final scheduled for 6 February.

The changes mean the two La Liga fixtures will take place roughly two months earlier than originally planned.

Why the Spanish Super Cup is moving to Istanbul

Istanbul will host the next edition of the Spanish Super Cup after Saudi Arabia was unable to stage the competition. Saudi Arabia had hosted the previous editions, but the tournament’s scheduled dates coincide with the country’s hosting of the Asian Cup.

The four participating clubs will also be unaffected by the second round of the Copa del Rey, which is scheduled for 2 December. Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid, Real Sociedad and Real Madrid will enter the Spanish cup competition in the last 16, meaning they will not be involved in that round.

The decision to move the La Liga fixtures is therefore linked directly to the Spanish Super Cup’s revised location and dates. The competition will bring together the four leading Spanish clubs in Istanbul in February, with the semi-finals taking place on 2 and 3 February before the final on 6 February.

The rescheduling applies specifically to Barcelona’s game against Atletico de Madrid and Real Sociedad’s match with Real Madrid, both of which had been due to be played on the weekend of 7 February. Their new dates will fall between 2 and 4 December, ahead of the clubs’ cup commitments later in the season.
