World Cup Day 31 What to Watch - France and Spain clash for place in final

The FIFA World Cup 2026 enters the semi-final stage on Tuesday with European heavyweights France and Spain battling for the first place in the final.

Only four teams remain in the tournament, and the pressure has reached its highest level. France are chasing a third consecutive World Cup final, while Spain are looking to return to football’s biggest game for the first time since winning the trophy in 2010.

France vs Spain

The first semi-final brings together two of the strongest teams at the tournament in a heavyweight encounter in Dallas.

France booked their place in the last four with a 2-0 victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals. Les Bleus have once again shown their ability to manage difficult knockout matches, combining defensive discipline with an attack capable of deciding games in moments.

Kylian Mbappe remains France’s biggest threat. The French captain has enjoyed another impressive World Cup and will be central to his country’s hopes of reaching the final. Didier Deschamps has also confirmed that Mbappe is fit, giving France a major boost ahead of the clash.

Spain reached the semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium. Mikel Merino came off the bench to score the decisive late goal and send La Roja into the final four.

The European champions have relied on their technical quality and ability to control possession throughout the tournament. However, France’s pace on the counterattack could provide one of Spain’s toughest tactical challenges so far.

Mbappe and Lamine Yamal take centre stage

Much of the attention will be on Mbappe and Spain teenager Lamine Yamal.

Yamal turned 19 ahead of the semi-final and described the meeting with France as the most important match of his life. Despite scoring only once at the tournament, the Barcelona forward remains one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking players.

The young winger has also enjoyed success against Mbappe in previous elimination matches and will hope to produce his biggest performance of the World Cup when Spain need him most.

Mbappe, meanwhile, has the experience of playing in two World Cup finals. His pace and finishing ability could be decisive against a Spain defence expected to spend long periods pushing high up the pitch.

The battle between two of football’s biggest stars adds another fascinating storyline to an already massive semi-final.

Defence could decide the contest

While the focus will naturally fall on the attacking stars, the match could ultimately be decided by the two defences.

Spain are expected to dominate possession and attempt to control the midfield, while France may be comfortable allowing their opponents to have the ball before attacking quickly in transition.

Didier Deschamps has prepared his side for a demanding midfield battle against the European champions. France have shown throughout the knockout stage that they are comfortable winning tight matches and protecting leads.

Spain, however, remain difficult to contain when they establish their passing rhythm. Their movement and patience could test France’s defensive organisation throughout the night.

First finalist to be confirmed

The winner of France against Spain will become the first team to book a place in the World Cup final.

England and defending champions Argentina meet in the second semi-final on Wednesday, with the winners of both matches advancing to Sunday’s final.
