Malick Fofana increasingly likely to stay at Lyon

Malick Fofana could remain with Olympique Lyonnais this season after Paulo Fonseca offered a strong indication that the Belgian winger is part of his plans.

Although interest from AS Roma remains, negotiations between the two clubs are currently far apart, making a late transfer increasingly uncertain.

Fofana, 21, is considered an important figure in Lyon’s attack. His pace, direct running and ability to beat defenders give the team an extra dimension, and Fonseca believes those qualities will be valuable throughout the 2026-27 campaign.

The coach also explained that Fofana has moved beyond a difficult period. “It was a difficult period for Malick last season. He had surgery, returned with pain, but now he is well, physically and mentally,” Fonseca said.

The Portuguese manager added that the player has handled the situation impressively and appears motivated to continue in France. Lyon have already rejected offers, underlining their confidence in Fofana’s potential and market value.

Fonseca made it clear that Lyon are not actively seeking a sale. “We are not worried about selling Malick. We have offers, but I think the club has managed the situation well,” he stated.

He warned that any interested club would need to make a substantial proposal. For now, Fofana looks increasingly likely to stay at Lyon.
