Scott McTominay to undergo heart surgery after Napoli diagnosis

Scott McTominay will undergo surgery to treat a minor heart rhythm disorder, Napoli have announced, ruling the Scotland midfielder out of several key fixtures before his expected return after the next international break.

Napoli said the 29-year-old had been diagnosed with an irregularity in his heart rhythm and would have an operation using PFF technology.

“McTominay will undergo surgery to treat a slight disorder in the heart’s rhythm, using PFF technology,” the Italian club said in a statement published on their official website.

The club added that McTominay should be able to resume normal training and playing duties after the next international break. That break is scheduled to begin in the second half of September.

His recovery means McTominay is certain to miss Napoli’s league fixtures against Inter, Bologna and Fiorentina. He will also be unavailable for their Champions League match against Arsenal.

McTominay has appeared in both of Napoli’s matches this season, featuring against Genoa and Como. His absence will therefore leave the reigning Italian champions without one of their key midfield options during a demanding run of domestic and European matches.

The midfielder joined Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 and made an immediate impact in Italy. He helped the club win the Italian league title in the 2024-25 season, as well as the Italian Super Cup.

McTominay was also named Italy’s player of the year in 2025 following his first full season with Napoli. His performances in midfield were a significant part of the club’s successful campaign.

Napoli’s announcement did not indicate that the condition was expected to prevent him from returning to competitive football after the international break. Instead, the club said the Scotland international would be able to play normally once he had completed the necessary treatment and recovery period.

The operation will temporarily interrupt McTominay’s second season with Napoli, after he became an important figure following his move from Manchester United. His availability after the international break will depend on his recovery from the procedure, with Napoli already facing a period without him in both Serie A and the Champions League.

The club’s next confirmed absences involving McTominay are the league meetings with Inter, Bologna and Fiorentina, followed by the Champions League encounter with Arsenal.
