Teboho Mokoena: Club Brugge linked with move for South Africa midfielder from Sundowns

South Africa defensive midfielder Teboho Mokoena is being linked with a move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Belgian side Club Brugge, with the 29-year-old’s future under scrutiny as his contract situation remains unclear.

The Sundowns No 4, valued at €2.80m on Transfermarkt, is reportedly on the radar of the Jupiler Pro League club as they assess central midfield options ahead of the new season. The probability of a deal remains unspecified (“?”), and there is no confirmation yet on whether Mokoena will be available as a free agent or would command a transfer fee.

Born in Bethlehem, Free State, on 24 January 1997, Mokoena has developed into one of the most accomplished holding midfielders in the South African top flight. Standing at 1.77m and right-footed, he has been deployed primarily as a defensive midfielder, anchoring Sundowns’ midfield in the Betway Premiership.

His performances for Sundowns in domestic and continental competition have increased interest from European scouts. While detailed contract dates have not been disclosed, the lack of publicly listed expiry information has fuelled speculation that overseas clubs are monitoring whether he could run down his deal and leave as a free agent.

The move, if it materialises, would see Mokoena swap the DStv Premiership for the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, a common stepping stone for African players targeting wider European exposure. Club Brugge, regulars in European competition, are understood to be attracted by his blend of positional discipline and experience at the base of midfield.

If a transfer to Belgium is completed, it could mark a pivotal next step in Mokoena’s career, offering him the platform to enhance his reputation beyond South Africa and test himself in one of Europe’s most scouted leagues.
