Houston 2 secure Chibuike Ukaegbu deal as dual-national defender leaves Sacramento FC

United States-Nigeria centre-back Chibuike Ukaegbu has joined Houston 2 from Sacramento FC, moving to the MLS Next Pro club on a contract running until 30 June 2028.

Ukaegbu, 19, completed the switch on 21 August after spending the previous part of the 2026 season with Sacramento. The Roseville, California-born defender had been playing in the USL Championship before moving to Houston.

He made 12 appearances in the USL Championship campaign, as well as featuring twice in the USL Cup and twice in the US Open Cup. Across those competitions, Ukaegbu played 16 matches and 587 minutes, without scoring.

The right-footed defender stands 1.88m tall and has played primarily at centre-back. His move takes him from the USL Championship to MLS Next Pro, with Houston 2 becoming the second senior club of his career.

Ukaegbu joined Sacramento FC from SAC Academy in November 2023. He spent the next period of his development with the club before making the move to Houston, where his new agreement keeps him under contract for the next two seasons.

The teenager holds both United States and Nigerian nationality. Born in California, he has represented Houston Dynamo FC 2 as his national club in the recorded player details.

His arrival comes after a season in which he gained competitive experience across league and cup football. He started 16% of Sacramento’s possible USL Championship matches and played 22% of the available league minutes, while also appearing in both the USL Cup and US Open Cup.

Ukaegbu’s previous appearances included four cup matches, giving him experience beyond league competition before his move to Houston. He did not register a goal or assist in those games and was not shown as having received a yellow or red card during the 2026 campaigns.

The completed transfer continues the defender’s progression from academy football to senior competition. His move from Sacramento FC to Houston 2 was registered on 21 August 2026, with his contract at the MLS Next Pro club set to expire on 30 June 2028.
