Teboho Mokoena: Al-Taawoun linked with move for South Africa and Sundowns midfielder

South African defensive midfielder Teboho Mokoena is being linked with a switch from Mamelodi Sundowns to Saudi Pro League side Al-Taawoun, with the 29-year-old’s future in the Betway Premiership now under scrutiny.

The Sundowns number four, valued at €2.80m on Transfermarkt, is reported to be on the radar of the Buraidah club as they look to reinforce their midfield options ahead of the new campaign. Data around the negotiation remains unclear, with the probability of the move currently listed only as “?”.

Mokoena, born in Bethlehem in South Africa’s Free State on 24 January 1997, has developed into one of the most accomplished holding midfielders in the DStv Premiership. Standing at 1.77m and naturally right-footed, he operates primarily as a defensive midfielder, screening the back line and dictating play from deep.

His contract situation at Sundowns is undisclosed, with no official expiry date listed, which has fuelled talk that the Brazilians could face a decision over whether to cash in or risk him running down his deal and ultimately becoming a free agent.

The South Africa international has remained a central figure for Sundowns this year. In a recent league outing against domestic rivals – a tightly contested match earlier this month that finished level – Mokoena delivered another typically disciplined performance, protecting the defence and recycling possession as Sundowns ground out a result in their title push.

Mokoena’s consistent form at club level, combined with his experience in South African domestic football and on the international stage, makes him a logical target for a Saudi Pro League side looking for proven quality without paying elite European-level fees.

Should a move materialise, a transfer to Al-Taawoun could offer Mokoena both a lucrative new platform and a fresh competitive challenge in the Gulf, shaping the next phase of his career and potentially redefining his reputation beyond African football.
