Real Madrid enter race to sign Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi
Spanish giants Real Madrid have reportedly opened discussions involving former midfielder Michael Essien as they explore a potential move for highly rated Ghanaian talent Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjaelland, according to Danish outlet Tipsbladet.
The report claims Yirenkyi is valued at around €30 million, with Los Blancos believed to be keen on securing the services of the promising midfielder as part of their long-term squad planning.
Essien, who previously played under Jose Mourinho at both Chelsea and Real Madrid and now works as FC Nordsjaelland assistant coach, is said to be playing a behind-the-scenes role in helping facilitate contact as the Portuguese coach edges closer to a return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Before Real Madrid’s interest emerged, Nordsjaelland had already rejected an €18 million bid from a Premier League club in January, underlining their firm stance on the player’s valuation.
Portuguese side FC Porto have also entered the race for the 20-year-old and are reportedly prepared to offer around €20 million, setting up a potential transfer battle ahead of the summer window.
Yirenkyi continues to attract attention after scoring in Ghana’s 1-1 international friendly draw against Wales in Cardiff. His performances in Denmark have further boosted his reputation, with 30 appearances in the recently concluded league season, contributing two goals and six assists.
The former Right to Dream Academy graduate has also been named in Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
