Zamalek face licensing pressure as $6.7m FIFA ban burden threatens CAF registration deadline

Egyptian giants Zamalek are facing a growing administrative and financial challenge that could jeopardise their participation in next season’s CAF Champions League, with around $6.7 million reportedly required to resolve outstanding FIFA-related cases before a crucial licensing deadline.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has set June 30 as the cut-off date for clubs to obtain the mandatory licenses required to compete in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The requirement includes full compliance with financial, legal, and administrative criteria, particularly the clearance of overdue payments and sanction-related obligations.

For Zamalek, the timeline is becoming increasingly tight. The club must resolve multiple FIFA-imposed financial disputes within a short window if they are to secure the necessary approval in time.

Failure to meet the conditions could place their participation in continental competition at serious risk, depending on CAF’s final assessment.

In contrast, rivals Al Ahly are in a far more stable position. The Cairo-based club is currently not under any FIFA transfer bans or financial restrictions, giving them a clear pathway to obtain their CAF license ahead of the deadline.

Their administrative stability places them in strong standing as they prepare for another campaign in African football.

The situation highlights a widening contrast between Egypt’s two most successful clubs. While Zamalek continue working through financial obligations that could affect their short-term continental ambitions, Al Ahly are monitoring developments from a distance, largely unaffected by the regulatory pressure facing their domestic rivals.

CAF’s licensing system remains a strict gatekeeper for participation in Africa’s elite club competitions, with enforcement becoming increasingly stringent in recent seasons.
