Phil Foden reacts after controversial red card in Manchester derby

Phil Foden said he was “gutted” after being sent off during Manchester City’s 1-0 derby victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The City forward was dismissed in a subdued first half after appearing to kick out at Bruno Fernandes. The decision sparked debate, with former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane and ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards both saying Foden should not have been shown a red card.

Foden later responded to City’s victory on social media, expressing his frustration at being unable to contribute fully to the result.

“Unbelievable performance from the lads. Gutted I didn’t get to play my part properly. Proud to be Blue,” he wrote.

Manchester City managed to protect their lead despite playing with 10 men and secured a 1-0 win. Foden was later seen gesturing “1-0” towards Manchester United supporters as he left Old Trafford.

The match also provided a notable derby debut for Elliot Anderson, who joined Manchester City’s celebrations after being named Player of the Match by Gary Neville.

Anderson moved to City from Nottingham Forest in the summer for a reported 116 million pounds. He had previously been strongly linked with a transfer to Manchester United.

After completing his move to Manchester City, Anderson described the club as “the Kings of Manchester”. His first appearance in the derby gave him an immediate opportunity to reinforce that claim, as City came away with victory despite Foden’s early dismissal.

Manchester City will next turn their attention to the EFL Cup. Norwich City will visit the Etihad Stadium in the third round on Thursday.
