Manchester United are considering moves for Lille’s Lucas Chevalier and Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen as part of their plans to potentially replace Andre Onana ahead of the new season.
According to Le Parisien, United and city rivals Manchester City are among the top European clubs monitoring 23-year-old Chevalier, who has emerged as one of the standout young goalkeepers in Ligue 1.
The Frenchman, currently under contract until 2027, is also being courted by Paris Saint-Germain, with Lille eager to convince him to sign an extension. The Ligue 1 club reportedly value him at approximately £58 million.
At the same time, United are exploring the possibility of bringing in Ter Stegen, who is facing an uncertain future at Barcelona.
The Catalan club is said to be prioritising Espanyol’s Joan Garcia as their long-term option in goal, while new manager Hansi Flick is believed to favour Juventus’ Wojciech Szczesny over the German international.
As a result, Ter Stegen, who has been at the Camp Nou since 2014, could be moved on in the coming transfer window.
The interest in both goalkeepers comes amid growing speculation over the future of current United No. 1, Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian has endured a difficult debut season at Old Trafford, marred by inconsistency and high-profile errors, which have drawn criticism from fans and pundits alike.
Reports suggest the Saudi Pro League may be a potential destination, and manager Ruben Amorim could sanction his departure if the right offer is made.
United’s goalkeeper search is part of a wider squad overhaul under Amorim. The club is also targeting Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres in attack, while considering exits for Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho, and Antony.
Replacing Onana with a more dependable figure between the posts appears to be a key step in United’s plans for a stronger defensive unit in the upcoming campaign.
