Mahamadou Sangare: Man City U21 and France-Mali forward linked with Freiburg move in Bundesliga switch rumour

Mahamadou Sangare, the France-Mali centre-forward currently with Manchester City U21, is being linked with a move to Bundesliga side Freiburg as the German club explore attacking options for the new season.

The 19-year-old left-footer only joined City’s academy set-up last summer from Paris Saint-Germain’s U23s, but his progress in youth and development competitions has drawn interest from abroad. The likelihood of a deal at this stage is rated at 36%, with Freiburg monitoring whether City would be prepared to sanction a departure for the teenager.

Sangare has featured regularly across youth and under-21 competitions, including Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, where he has maintained a consistent scoring record. His performances in the UEFA Youth League stand out in particular, having previously struck 12 goals in 16 matches in the competition.

Before arriving in England, Sangare came through the French system, moving from Racing CFF’s youth ranks to Montrouge U17, then on to PSG’s U19s and U23s. He was twice a French U19 champion with PSG, underlining his status in one of Europe’s most competitive academy environments.

Born in Dionkoulane in March 2007 and standing at 1.77m, Sangare is eligible for both France and Mali at international level, though his club development has taken clear precedence so far. Having joined Manchester City’s U21s on a free transfer in July 2025, his future now appears to be the subject of growing speculation as Freiburg assess whether to turn their interest into a formal approach.
