Jonathan John has completed a move to Naftan Novopolotsk from a spell as a free agent, signing for the Belarusian club on 2026-04-02. The Nigerian left-back joins the Vysheyshaya Liga side on a free transfer after leaving Russian outfit Shinnik Yaroslavl, with his latest market value listed at €125k. His contract with Naftan is currently scheduled to run until 2026-12-31.

The transfer sees the 24-year-old defender re-establish himself in Belarus, a league and country he knows well from previous spells, and returns him to top-flight football after a period without a club. Naftan, who compete in the Vysheyshaya Liga, have moved to strengthen their defensive options on the left flank, adding a naturally left-footed full-back with experience across Belarus, Russia and Moldova.

Born in Kaduna on 09 May 2001, John has built his career entirely abroad rather than in his native Nigeria. After emerging from obscurity – his first recorded move was from an unknown club to Moldovan side FC Saksan Ceadir-Lunga in 2020 – he has steadily worked his way through Eastern European football. Spells at FK Slutsk, FK Gomel and FK Smorgon in Belarus, followed by a switch to Shinnik Yaroslavl in Russia, have given him familiarity with physically demanding leagues and harsh playing conditions.

His career path has been closely tracked through his rising market value. From €25k during his early days at FK Slutsk, he climbed to €75k and then €125k at FK Gomel, eventually peaking at €175k while at Shinnik Yaroslavl before a later adjustment to €125k during his period without a club. That trajectory underlines a player who has generally been on an upward curve, even if contractual gaps have intermittently left him unattached.

John’s main position is at left-back, though his profile is that of a modern full-back: left-footed, capable of operating up and down the flank, and used to playing in back fours in the Belarusian top flight and Russia’s system with Shinnik. At 1.79m, he offers a balance of mobility and defensive presence rather than sheer aerial dominance.

This latest move marks his second return to Belarus from a stint without a club. He first re-entered the Vysheyshaya Liga in 2022 with FK Gomel after an earlier free-agent period, and has since become a familiar name across the division thanks to subsequent transfers to FK Smorgon and then on to Russia. His arrival at Naftan now gives the Novopolotsk club a defender who understands the domestic landscape, travel demands and playing style of Belarusian football.

For Naftan, securing a player of John’s experience without paying a transfer fee is a calculated piece of business, particularly given the gap between his current €125k valuation and the cost of the deal. For John, it is another step in a career built away from home comforts, reinforcing his status as a Nigerian international expatriate in Eastern Europe.

With his contract set to run until 2026-12-31, the coming seasons in the Vysheyshaya Liga will be decisive. A strong spell at Naftan could restore or even exceed his previous peak valuation and further cement his reputation as one of the more seasoned Nigerian defenders operating in Eastern European football.
