Arsenal have opened negotiations with Galatasaray over a possible move for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, but his wage demands could prevent the transfer from going ahead.

The Premier League champions are looking to add another proven goalscorer to their attack as they prepare to defend their league title, with Osimhen emerging as a leading target.

However, the two clubs remain some distance from an agreement, with the striker’s current salary understood to be a major obstacle.

Osimhen’s goalscoring record attracts Arsenal

According to reports from Foot Mercato, Arsenal are searching for a striker who can provide a reliable source of goals and strengthen Mikel Arteta’s attacking options.

Osimhen fits that profile after producing 30 goal contributions for Galatasaray last season.

The Nigeria international is therefore viewed as a player capable of adding further firepower as Arsenal compete domestically and in Europe.

The Gunners begin their Premier League title defence against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday.

Wage demands threaten transfer

Despite Arsenal’s interest, the club are not prepared to match the salary Osimhen currently receives at Galatasaray.

The Nigerian forward earns a net annual salary of €20m and remains under contract with the Turkish club until 2029.

Arsenal would require the striker to accept a reduction in his current earnings for a deal to become possible.

That leaves Osimhen’s decision central to the negotiations, with the Gunners maintaining their interest but unwilling to meet his existing salary.

Arsenal yet to make formal offer

Although discussions have begun between Arsenal and Galatasaray, the negotiations have not yet reached the stage where the English club are ready to make an offer.

The clubs are still far apart on the personal terms of a potential contract, meaning there is no agreement in place for the Nigerian striker.

For Osimhen, a move to Arsenal would represent a return to the Premier League and an opportunity to compete for major honours with the reigning champions.

But unless he agrees to lower his salary, the proposed transfer is likely to remain complicated.

Arsenal’s interest is clear, but whether the Nigeria international is prepared to take a pay cut could ultimately determine if the deal goes through.
