Brendan Wiredu: Salford bring in Plymouth defender for League Two campaign

England and Ghana centre-back Brendan Wiredu has joined Salford from Plymouth, strengthening the League Two club’s defensive options with a move completed on 21 August 2026.

The 26-year-old London-born defender arrives at Salford after just one League One appearance for Plymouth this season, playing one minute. He did not feature in the EFL Cup before switching clubs.

Wiredu began the campaign with Plymouth in League One but will now continue his season in the division below with Salford. The move also gives the defender a fresh chapter after a single season at Home Park.

Plymouth signed Wiredu from Fleetwood on 4 July 2025 for €300,000. He had spent three years with Fleetwood after moving there from Colchester United in July 2022.

The defender came through the youth set-up at Charlton Athletic before making his senior move to Colchester. During the 2018-19 season, he spent time on loan at Bromley, where he gained experience away from Charlton’s under-23 side.

Wiredu returned to Colchester on loan in September 2019 before making the move permanent in February 2021. His route to Salford has therefore included spells in the academy system, loan football and transfers between English clubs.

At 1.91m, Wiredu provides a sizeable presence at centre-back. He is right-footed and has represented both England and Ghana at international level, although the available career record does not include senior international appearances.

His arrival comes as Salford prepare for their League Two campaign, while his former club Plymouth remain in League One. Wiredu’s recorded market value is €400,000, following a previous high of €450,000.

The transfer is the latest move in a senior career that has taken the defender from Charlton’s youth ranks to Bromley, Colchester, Fleetwood and Plymouth. At Salford, he will wear the club’s number four shirt.

Wiredu has now completed his move from Plymouth to Salford and is part of the League Two club’s squad for the 2026-27 season.
