Club Brugge eye South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena in Sundowns raid

South Africa international Teboho Mokoena, the 29-year-old defensive midfielder currently at Mamelodi Sundowns, is being linked with a move to Belgian Pro League side Club Brugge.

The Sundowns No 4, valued at €2.80m on Transfermarkt, is the subject of fresh speculation after reports in Belgium and South Africa noted interest from the Jupiler Pro League giants. The rumoured switch from the Betway Premiership champions to Bruges is still at an early stage, with the probability of the deal rated only as “?” and no agreement in place.

Mokoena’s contractual situation at Sundowns has not been made public, with no official expiry date listed, prompting talk that the Brazilians could face a decision between cashing in now or risking the midfielder edging towards free-agent territory further down the line. There is no indication at this stage that his deal has already run down or expired.

Born in Bethlehem in South Africa’s Free State on 24 January 1997, Mokoena has developed into one of the PSL’s most accomplished holding midfielders. Standing at 1.77m and predominantly right-footed, he has been used mainly as a defensive midfielder but is comfortable operating across the central areas.

The speculation comes on the back of another assured display for Sundowns in the DStv Premiership this month, when he featured in their recent league outing against domestic opposition, helping his side to a positive result as they closed out the campaign at the summit of South African football.

Mokoena has long been tipped for a move abroad, having already proved himself in South Africa’s top flight and on the continental stage with Sundowns. A successful switch to Club Brugge would offer him a first taste of European league football and could be a defining step in shaping the next phase of his career and international reputation if the transfer materialises.
