Arsenal defender Saliba ruled out for lengthy period with back injury

Arsenal and France centre-back William Saliba faces a prolonged spell on the sidelines after scans revealed a back injury sustained following his return from the 2026 World Cup.

The Premier League club confirmed in an official statement that the 25-year-old defender, who helped France reach the semi-finals of the tournament, has been diagnosed with a back problem that will keep him out for an extended period.

Saliba, a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s defence, flew back to London after France’s World Cup campaign ended at the last-four stage and subsequently underwent specialist medical tests.

“The tests revealed a back injury. However, full medical assessments have confirmed that his condition does not currently require surgical intervention.”

Arsenal confirmed that Saliba has already begun a tailored treatment and rehabilitation programme under the close supervision of the club’s medical staff.

The London side underlined that his condition will be monitored continuously throughout the recovery process, with the plan adapted as he progresses.

“William will immediately begin a treatment and rehabilitation programme under the supervision of our medical team, with ongoing monitoring throughout his recovery,” Arsenal said.

The club added that the France international will be absent “for a long period”, although no specific timeframe has been given for his return to action.

Arsenal declined to confirm how many months Saliba is expected to miss, reflecting the uncertainty that often surrounds back injuries, which can vary considerably in severity and recovery time.

The statement stressed that the priority within the club is to support the player fully, both physically and mentally, as he works towards regaining full fitness.

The club concluded by emphasising that “everyone at the club is focused on supporting him to ensure he regains his full physical fitness as quickly as possible.”
