Salah leads the way as Trabzonspor strengthen their Super Lig challenge

Trabzonspor moved up to fourth in the Super Lig after beating Besiktas 2-0 on Monday, with Mohamed Salah scoring his eighth league goal of the season to take sole possession of top spot in the scoring charts.

The home side took control in the 21st minute when Ozan Tufan found the net. Besiktas were unable to respond, and Trabzonspor extended their advantage after the interval.

A quick attack initiated by Franculino Dju created the opening for Salah in the 71st minute. The 34-year-old Egypt international finished with his left foot to make it 2-0 and complete a fourth successive victory for Thomas Reis’ side in all competitions.

The result lifts Trabzonspor to fourth place with 16 points. Besiktas remain fifth on 15 points after suffering defeat in the match between the two sides.

Salah’s goal also gave him the outright lead in the Super Lig scoring race. He moved ahead of the group of Gift Orban, Vedat Muriqi and Eldor Shomurodov, who had been level at the top before Monday’s match.

The former Liverpool star has also registered three assists this season, one fewer than the league leader in that category, Alexandros Kyziridis. With 11 direct goal contributions, Salah has the highest total in the Super Lig, with no other player matching his tally so far.

Trabzonspor will next turn their attention to European competition. Their next fixture is against Heart of Midlothian in the second round of the league phase of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
