Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has been suspended for three matches by FIFA following disciplinary proceedings over comments made after the Pharaohs’ elimination by Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Team director Ibrahim Hassan has also received a three-match ban, while Egyptian forward Mostafa Ziko has been suspended for five matches following the incident.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has confirmed receiving notification of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decisions and has submitted a formal request for a written explanation of the reasons behind the sanctions.

FIFA rules on Egypt trio

The disciplinary measures stem from post-match remarks made by the three Egyptian football figures following their dramatic 3-2 defeat by Argentina in the World Cup round of 16.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee launched an investigation into the comments before issuing its final rulings.

Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan were each handed three-match suspensions, while Ziko received a five-game ban.

The EFA has since asked FIFA’s disciplinary body to provide a full written explanation detailing the grounds for the decisions.

Egypt’s World Cup campaign ends in heartbreak

Egypt’s tournament ended in dramatic fashion after a promising campaign that saw the North African side advance from Group G in second place.

The Pharaohs began their group-stage campaign with draws against Belgium and Iran, alongside a 3-1 victory over New Zealand.

They then progressed past Australia on penalties in the round of 32 to set up a meeting with defending champions Argentina in Atlanta.

Egypt appeared on course for a memorable victory after establishing a 2-0 lead midway through the second half. However, Argentina mounted a late comeback to win 3-2, ending the Pharaohs’ hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals.

EFA seeks clarification over sanctions

The Egyptian federation’s request for a written explanation comes as it seeks further details about the disciplinary decisions affecting three members of the national team setup.

The suspensions follow the conclusion of FIFA’s investigation into the post-match comments, with the governing body having formally communicated its rulings to the EFA.

The federation’s application asks the disciplinary committee to clarify the motives behind the bans imposed on Hossam Hassan, Ibrahim Hassan and Ziko.
