Pape Thiaw vows Senegal will fight to avoid elimination

Fresh revelations have emerged over the contract negotiations between Senegal national team head coach Pape Thiaw and the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), with journalist Bacary Cissé alleging that months of tense discussions were marked by escalating financial demands, high-level political intervention, and the threat of a boycott.

According to Cissé, negotiations over Thiaw’s long-term contract became increasingly complicated as both parties struggled to reach an agreement, with the coach reportedly tabling a series of lucrative demands before eventually settling on revised terms.

Initial demands

Cissé claims that during the opening phase of negotiations, Thiaw requested a financial package that included a monthly salary of 50 million FCFA, a signing bonus of 360 million FCFA, and an additional qualification bonus of 150 million FCFA.

The report further alleges that the Senegal coach sought an automatic salary increase to 62.5 million FCFA per month should the Lions reach the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup. He also reportedly demanded an annual image rights bonus worth 50 million FCFA.

According to the report, these demands stalled negotiations as the FSF considered the financial implications of the proposed package.

Revised proposal after presidential intervention

Cissé further alleges that the negotiations took a new turn after a telephone conversation involving Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye while the national team was in the United States.

Following the discussion, Thiaw is said to have revised his salary expectations, agreeing to reduce his monthly pay request to 30 million FCFA. However, the report claims he simultaneously increased several other financial demands.

Under the revised proposal, the coach allegedly requested a signing bonus of 440 million FCFA, special bonuses amounting to 500 million FCFA, and a staggering performance bonus of one billion FCFA should Senegal go on to win the FIFA World Cup.

Contract dispute before Norway clash

Perhaps the most dramatic revelation concerns the period leading up to Senegal’s World Cup encounter against Norway.

According to Cissé, only hours before kick-off, Thiaw reportedly informed officials that he would only take his place on the bench after his contract had been signed, creating a tense standoff behind the scenes.

Following last-minute negotiations, both sides are said to have reached a compromise.

The agreement reportedly saw Thiaw accept a net monthly salary of 30 million FCFA together with a signing bonus of 120 million FCFA. The signing bonus, according to the report, would be financed by the Senegalese government and paid in quarterly instalments of 30 million FCFA.

Additional performance incentives

Despite accepting the revised deal, Cissé alleges that Thiaw secured additional performance-related incentives.

These reportedly include a bonus equivalent to one percent of the prize money should Senegal win the World Cup, along with an exceptional bonus of 180 million FCFA, structured as payments of 5 million FCFA per month over a three-year period.

The combined incentives have fuelled widespread discussion in Senegal regarding the financial terms surrounding the national team coach’s appointment and the extent of government involvement in the negotiations.

Neither Pape Thiaw nor the Senegalese Football Federation has publicly responded to the allegations or confirmed the reported figures. As such, the claims remain unverified and should be treated as allegations pending official clarification.
