Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to reach League Cup quarter-finals

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 6-5 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the English League Cup after the match finished 1-1 in normal time.

Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty. Liverpool responded almost immediately, with Virgil van Dijk awarded a spot-kick two minutes later after the ball struck Wesley Fofana’s hand.

Cody Gakpo scored from the penalty in the 43rd minute to bring Liverpool level.

Neither side could find a winner before the end of normal time, sending the tie to a penalty shoot-out. Liverpool held their nerve to secure a 6-5 victory and progress to the last eight.

The result means Chelsea have now been eliminated by Liverpool six times in the history of their English League Cup appearances – more than against any other team.
